Perifoam Case Study
Brad, aged 54 years, sustained a traumatic wound to his shin as a result of scraping it on the rungs of a ladder. The lesion extended to periosteum and comprised a significant volume of devitalised tissue. A general surgeon debrided the site, with the resultant wound measuring 60mm x 45mm.
Factors which impacted on planning for Brad’s post-discharge care included the demanding requirements of his legal practice, the need for regular overseas air travel, his poor calf-muscle function {altered gait resultant from a motor vehicle accident}, obesity and smoking.
Vascular assessment demonstrated adequate arterial flow to withstand a high grade of compression bandaging – a multi-layered system was selected. The dressing and bandaging were changed weekly to every ten days, depending on travel and work commitments. An Aquashield plastic bag was used to keep the bandaging dry between Clinic visits.
Due to the length of time between dressing changes and the nature of the wound pathophysiology, antimicrobial coverage was an important inclusion in the wound management regime. Swab reports revealed a persistent Staphylococcus aureus colonisation.
Inflammatory episodes were initially managed with oral antibiotics and a silver dressing. Further recurrences highlighted that provision for longer term anti-microbial control was required. Subsequently Peri-Foam (Bio-Assist Industries Pty Ltd) was instigated for wound cleansing at the time of dressing change. Perifoam’s cleansing ingredients are largely derived from surfactants and complex alcohols, whilst its antibacterial action are based on Tea-Tree Oli (Melaleuca alternifolia).
Perifoam was applied for a 5-minute dwell time prior to thorough washing of the wound with potable water. The dressing and bandaging procedure then followed. Brad did not encounter any stinging, burning or irritation which can occasionally accompany the topical use of tea-tree preparation. The refreshing smell of Perifoam and the ‘feeling of cleanliness” was valued by the patient.
Repeat wound swabs demonstrated that Staphylococcus aureus remained on the wound surface. Importantly, however the ongoing bacterial presence did not induce inflammation or delay wound repair. It was through that the regular use of Perifoam ha d been able to assist in reducing the number of colonising flora, enhancing Brad’s immune system and healing response.
The wound site closed after 10 months of treatment.

Calvary Mater Newcastle
Perifoam was present to the Products Committee for consideration for use within the Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital. It was decided by this committee that a trial be conducted to determine the products sustainability for future use within the hospital.
Perifoam was considered for favourable use over products that were currently being used at the time of the trials.
East Devonport Medical Centre
EDMC used Perifoam on a patient who they had been struggling with for many months. Soon after they commenced using the product, the patient saw a decrease of episodes of Cellulitis and Perifoam kept his skin well moisturised.
Perifoam to treat Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB)
Our son is 10 years old and has Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), this is a rare genetic skin disorder which is characterised by skin fragility with blister formation occurring spontaneously or following minor trauma. This sometimes involves the mucous membranes. EB can be broadly divided into three major categories, Simplex, Junctional and Dystrophic. These categories can be further sub typed based on inheritance and clinical features. EB is a result of a genetic change or mutation in one of the genes that code for the proteins that “glue” the skin together. The particular protein is then reduced or missing in a specific layer in the skin, causing structural weakness. As EB is a complex condition it varies in severity from person to person . To summarise [redacted] has various wounds over his body that include the neck, ears, buttocks, shouider under arms and elbows. As a result of mucous membrane involvement he also has 3 stomas, Trachy, Gastrostomy and Supa Pubic Calheter. Finally a clean wound is a healing wound and in EB that can take a lot of work. Anything that can save time and not do any fuither harm is very helpful and Peri Foam does this for us.Ruth
Thank you once again for the loan of your products. As promised, here are some words that you can use on your website if you wish. I recently suffered a broken ankle and broken arm and was confined to a wheelchair for six weeks. Bio Assist’s products really made life a lot more comfortable. The Clinirest mattress was like sleeping on marshmallow; I couldn’t roll over in bed, but the mattress made me feel weightless and I slept more soundly. I also found the Clinirest Footrest very helpful when I spent time at a computer; just having my legs supported and raised a little stopped my ankle from swelling too quickly. I highly recommend these products. Ruth, Como, NSW.All the best Ruth
